Supporting AZ schools from the beginning….
It all started when…
In 1997 the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandated nationwide that for children whose behavior impacts their learning or the learning of others, schools must implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS was then mandated as part of the 2001 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act and again in 2015 with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), both impacting K-12 schools across the US.

1997 - IDEA mandates PBIS for students with behavior problems.
1998 - National Technical Assistance Center on PBIS (PBIS.org) was formed.
1999 - Arizona Behavior Initiative (ABI) formed at ASU, UA, NAU by the Arizona Dept. of Education to lead PBIS training in AZ.
2000 - ABI website published.
2006 - ABI become PBISaz to align with national/state naming conventions.
2010 - AZDOE funding to universities end, Dr. Gulchak, Dr. Flores, and Dr. Jannasch-Pennell save PBISaz and establish Behavior Education, Research, and Technology (BERT) institute at ASU to continue PBISaz work training and coaching schools in the state.
2011 - ASU funding ends and KOI Education is established to continue the work of PBISaz and ASU in supporting educators and students.
2012-2017 - AZDDPC works with PBISaz Advisory Council (led by KOI) to in response to SB1197 Arizona Task Force on Best Practices in Special Education and Behavior Management.
2013 - PBISaz Achievement Awards and the PBISaz Film Festival is established to recognize PBIS school outcomes. Both awards align with the international APBS.org organization.
2017 - PBISaz is led by Metro PBIS Network to reestablish community engagement and the PBISaz community.
2024 - PBISaz is led by AZ PBIS Coalition to reestablish community engagement and the PBISaz community including awards

Schools were recognized for their PBIS achievements since 2013 in Arizona. Recognition was earned due to implementation fidelity and data-based outcomes in reducing behavior problems in school. Here are the winners:

Our FilmFest ran from 2013-2019 at the BET-C.org Conference. Over that period we had 100’s of entries from many schools across the state. Here are the award winners.
