Graphic timeline from 1999

1997 - IDEA mandates PBIS for students with behavior problems.

1998 - National Technical Assistance Center on PBIS (PBIS.org) was formed.

1999 - Arizona Behavior Initiative (ABI) formed at ASU, UA, NAU to lead PBIS training in AZ, funded by the Arizona Dept. of Education .

2000 - ABI website published.

2006 - ABI became PBISaz to align with national/state naming conventions.

2010 - AZDOE funding to universities ends. Dr. Gulchak, Dr. Flores, and Dr. Jannasch-Pennell save PBISaz and establish Behavior Education, Research, and Technology (BERT) institute at ASU to continue PBISaz work training and coaching schools in the state.

2011 - ASU funding ends and KOI Education is established to continue the work of PBISaz and ASU in supporting educators and students.

2012-2017 - AZDDPC works with PBISaz Advisory Council (led by KOI) in response to SB1197 Arizona Task Force on Best Practices in Special Education and Behavior Management.

2013 - PBISaz Achievement Awards and the PBISaz Film Festival is established to recognize PBIS school outcomes. Both awards align with the international APBS.org organization.

2017 - PBISaz is led by Metro PBIS Network to reestablish community engagement and the PBISaz community.

2024 - PBISaz is led by AZ PBIS Coalition to reestablish community engagement and the PBISaz community including awards

Schools were first recognized for their PBIS achievements in Arizona in 2013 at the KOI Education sponsored BET-C Conference. Recognition was earned through high implementation fidelity and data-based outcomes in reducing behavior problems in school. Here are the winners:

PBISaz Film Festival logo

The purpose of the PBISaz Film Festival was to recognize students and educators for creating videos that showcase or teach the core principles of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) in their school or facility. Winning entries will be shown at the Behavior, Education, Technology Conference, BET-C, in Phoenix, AZ.

Our Film Fest ran from 2013-2019 at the KOI Education sponsored BET-C.org Conference. Over that period we had 100’s of entries from many schools across the state. Unfortunately, most video links are broken or have moved since posting and are no longer available.

2013 - Sacaton Elementary School District: Sacaton Middle School - Staff and students from Sacaton Middle School on the Gila River Indian Reservation kick off their school year with an assembly announcing their Braves Expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. | Page Unified School District - Watch all four Page District schools plan, kick-off, and introduce the PRIDE Expectations to students and staff. PRIDE stands for Positive, Respectful, Involved, Determined, Excellent and represents the values of our community as chosen by all students and staff. We believe in Page and we have PRIDE! | Deer Valley Unified School District: Desert Mountain Elementary School - PBIS Team HAWK takes on a mission to find the school mascot Hawk that has been lost due to students poor behavior. Learn, as our students do, how to demonstrate our school-wide Expectation of being Honorable, Accountable, Willing, Kind. | Scottsdale Unified School District: Mohave Middle School - Students play cool new video game controlling their school mascot. The goal is good behavior. | Sacaton Elementary School District: Sacaton Middle School - Sacaton 6th grade students teaching our Braves’ Bus Expectation:Be Safe. Both non-example and examples are modeled on the school bus with students playing the role of the bus driver. A great model for students, staff, and drivers! | Phoenix Union High School District: Alhambra High School - The Videos are aligned with the P.B.I.S. school wide expectations around Alhambra High School. And the staff and students enjoyed making the videos to support great human values around the campus.

2015 - Lake View Primary School, students demonstrate and teach PRIDE Expectations throughout the school | Augustus H.Shaw’sShark TV filmed a public information video for our school. We thought it would be a fun to show students (and teachers!) what PBIS doesn’t look like and then, show them what it does look like. This is shared school-wide. We will be doing more PBIS public information video’s throughout the year showing various expectations. | Sierra Linda High SchoolStaff With A Purpose (SWAP) Cards give students the opportunity to recognize adults at SLHS for demonstrating our school PBIS expectations! | This grade 2 student written, directed and produced video from Drexel Elementary School describes the impact and consequences of cyber bullying at school. Power words, images and message from such young students. | Breaking News….Coyote Springs Elementary School students and staff report on their success with the PBIS “Pawsitive” behavior initiative! | Do you want to be Respectful? Grade 6 girls at Sacaton Middle School on the Gila River Reservation wrote and sang a song about PBIS expectations at their school. | We’re the Braves! Grade 6 boys at Sacaton Middle School on the Gila River Reservation wrote and sang a song about PBIS expectations at their school.

2016 - Phoenix ESD: Whittier Elementary School - Whittier created a Be The Change Club with the mission to stop bullying, school-wide. The club students chose the Stop Walk Talk program to teach to the whole school. | Florence USD: Magma Ranch K-8 -This video showcases the culture and community at Magma, proud a PBIS! | Sacaton ESD: Sacaton Middle School - Staff annually rehearse a spectacular PBIS Kick-Off event. Students always have a lot of fun learning the Braves’ Expectations! | Scottsdale USD: Mohave Middle School - This student written, directed and narrated film teaches fellow students ‘How to get a PAWS’ PBIS ticket. | Scottsdale USD: Desert Canyon Elementary School - Students and staff show off their psychedelic imagination and creativity by changing the words to “Obladi Oblada” to align with school-wide expectations. | Flagstaff USD: Killip Elementary School - Students and staff collaborated to demonstrate “S.M.A.R.T.” behavior in all locations throughout the school. | Florence USD: Magma Ranch K-8 - Let’s teach staff the expectations for the Staff Lounge…and have a bit of fun doing it! | Marana USD: Marjorie W. Estes Elementary School - Students star in this film about the school-wide PBIS expectations at Estes School. | Mesa USD: Mesa High School - Student Bryce Noir explains and demonstrates the M.E.S.A. school-wide expectations like only Bryce Noir can.
