4 Big Reasons Why PBIS Has Been Getting Results for 20 Years!

Improving student academic and behavior outcomes is about ensuring all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and interventions possible. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) provides an operational framework for achieving these outcomes. More importantly, PBIS is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but IS a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.

Since 1999, PBIS has been implemented in over 30,000 schools. It keeps getting results for four very big reasons. These are the four integrated elements of every PBIS implementation that get results:

  1. Systems, that efficiently and effectively support educators to sustain PBIS

  2. Data, used continuously for decision making

  3. Practices, implemented by all school personnel with fidelity and integrity

  4. Outcomes, that are measurable and shared with all stakeholders

What are just a few the dozens of research proven outcomes of PBIS?

  • Decreased classroom disruptions and office discipline referrals

  • Increased academic achievement and performance

  • Improved school climate and safety

In Arizona, the Governor's Office published recommendations for PBIS several years ago, and these recommendations are still true today. See the Report Summary or the full Legislative Task Force on Best Practices in Behavior Management which strongly encourages the adoption of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support for all K-12 schools.

The National Center for PBIS, PBIS.org, has tons of resources and is the world leader in research and development in this system. All you need is a Ph.D. and time to be able to read through 20 years of evidence to synthesize and evaluate all the knowledge and resources that the Center has made available.

Or, you can partner with your friendly neighborhood experts, KOI Education, who have done the hard work for you. We reduce the time and frustration of using a trial and error approach to implementing PBIS because we have helped hundreds of schools achieve the outcomes we can help you too.
