Recently, the US. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) released a report examining over 12 years of school shooting and violence incidents across the nation. Their analysis are detailed, sharp, and eye opening. Their conclusion and recommendations, however, were no surprise to most educators.

Prevention Models, Like PBIS, Address the Root Causes of Violence

The report concludes:

  • Three-Tiered models like Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are widely adopted in school settings

  • PBIS provided primary prevention to all, with secondary and tertiary intervention to support students who may be in distress

  • PBIS fosters collaborative school climates

  • PBIS promotes students emotional and physical well-being

  • PBIS decreases the impact of adverse experiences
